Using the softened butter, butter the insides of four 10-ounce ramekins and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar. Placeramekins in a shallow baking pan; set aside.
Preheat oven to 350°F. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, whipping cream, malted milk powder, the remaining 1/4 cup sugar and the vanilla. Stir in bread pieces. Let stand for 10 minutes.
Divide half of the bread mixture among the prepared ramekins. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. Top with the remaining bread mixture.
Bake, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes or until puffed and golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Serve warm.
