Arrange medium coals in a pyramid in the center of a charcoal grill. Cover and preheat for 10 to 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine ground pasilla (or ground ancho), brown sugar, espresso powder, cumin, salt and garlic powder. Sprinkle over both sides of steaks. Rub in with your fingers.
Place steaks on the grill rack directly above the coals. Cover and sear for 3 minutes. Turn steaks; cover and sear for 3 minutes more. Move steaks to the outside edges of the grill, away from the coals. Cover and grill about 3 minutes more or to desired doneness (145°F for medium-rare or 160°F for medium). Cover; let steaks stand for 10 minutes before serving.
