- Preheat oven to 400°F. For the Apple Filling, mix apples, brown sugar, lemon juice and vanilla in large bowl. Mix flour, cornstarch and cinnamon in small bowl. Sprinkle over apples; toss to coat well. Spoon into 8x8-inch baking dish sprayed with no stick cooking spray. Cover baking dish with foil and place on rimmed baking sheet.
- Bake 35 minutes.
- Meanwhile, for the Crumble Topping, mix brown sugar, flour, pecans (optional), salt and cinnamon in medium bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Remove dish from oven. Remove foil and sprinkle topping mixture evenly over apples.
- Bake 25 to 30 minutes longer or until filling is bubbly and topping is golden brown. Allow to cool about 30 minutes before serving. Serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
Test Kitchen Tip: For apple crumble with apples that hold their shape better, use firm and tart apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or Pink Lady. For a softer apple texture, use sweeter and softer apples like Golden Delicious, Gala and McIntosh.
