- Pour oil into deep fryer, large heavy skillet or saucepan, filling no more than 1/3 full. Heat oil to 375°F on medium heat.
- Stir Batter Mix and water in medium bowl until smooth. Let stand 10 minutes to thicken.
- Drop batter carefully by teaspoonfuls into hot oil. Cook several hush puppies at a time. Fry 2 minutes or until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels.
Cooking Tips
Test Kitchen Tip: To prepare only 1/2 of the box, use 1 cup Hush Puppy Mix and 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon water. Continue as directed above.
Jalapeño Hush Puppies: Add 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced, to batter.
Hush Puppies with Corn and Chiles: Add 1 can (8 1/2 ounces) cream style corn and 1 can (4 1/2 ounces) chopped green chiles, drained, to the batter.
