Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Crumble in beef and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon to break up the meat.
Add onion flakes, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, cumin and pepper. Cook for 3 minutes.
Whisk tomato paste with water. Add to the pan. Cook for 2 minutes, until thickened.
Meanwhile, heat taco shells in the microwave for 45 seconds, as per package directions. Spoon ground beef filling into taco shells and serve with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream, if desired.
