Tear off a 44-by-18-inch piece of heavy-duty foil; fold in half to make a 22-by-18-inch rectangle. Place sweet potatoes, apple and currants in the center of the foil rectangle.
In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and cayenne. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over sweet potato mixture. Drizzle with apple juice. Bring up two opposite edges of the foil and seal with a double fold. Fold the remaining two edges together to completely enclose mixture, leaving space for steam to build.
Grill the foil packet on the rack of an uncovered charcoal grill directly over medium coals for 30 to 40 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender, turning packet once halfway through grilling. (For a gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Place foil packet on grill rack over heat. Cover and grill as above.)
Sprinkle with pecans before serving.
