Combine prunes, apricots, apples, cherries, bay leaves, sugar, salt and port (or cranberry juice) in a nonreactive medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer; partially cover and continue to simmer very slowly for 40 minutes. Uncover and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the fruit is tender and the liquid is slightly reduced and thickened. Discard bay leaves before serving.
