In a medium bowl, stir together breadcrumbs, onion, milk, Parmesan, basil, garlic salt and pepper. Add meat; mix well. Shape meat mixture into eight 3/4-inch-thick patties. Place patties in a shallow container. Cover and chill for 1 hour.
For a charcoal grill, grill patties on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium coals for 14 to 18 minutes or until done (160°F), turning once halfway through grilling and topping each burger with a cheese slice during the last 1 minute. (For a gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Place patties on grill rack over heat. Cover and grill as above.)
Serve burgers on rolls with lettuce and tomato. If desired, top with a spoonful of pasta sauce.
