In a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker combine beans, ham, carrots, celery, onion, and pepper. Stir in tomatoes and broth.
Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 6 to 8 hours or on high-heat setting for 3 to 4 hours.
Before serving, stir in kale. If desired, sprinkle each serving with cheese.
