Melt butter and chocolate in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; cool.
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8- or 9-inch-square baking pan. Stir sugar into the cooled chocolate mixture in the saucepan. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating with a wooden spoon just until combined. Stir in vanilla.
Stir together flour and baking soda in a small bowl. Add the flour mixture to the chocolate mixture; stir just until combined. If desired, stir in nuts. Spread the batter in the prepared pan.
Bake for 30 minutes for an 8-inch pan (or 25 minutes for a 9-inch pan). Cool on a wire rack. Cut into 16 brownies.
