Preheat oven to 400°F. To prepare topping: In a medium bowl, stir together flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, salt and, if desired, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; set aside.
To prepare filling: In a large saucepan, combine cherries, 1 cup sugar and cornstarch. Cook over medium heat until the cherries release their juices, stirring occasionally. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Keep filling hot.
In a small bowl, stir together egg and milk. Add to the flour mixture, stirring just to moisten. Transfer the hot filling to a 2-quart square baking dish. Using a spoon, immediately drop the topping into six mounds on top of the filling. If desired, combine the remaining 2 teaspoons sugar with 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon; sprinkle over the topping.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the topping is golden brown. Let cool in the pan on a wire rack about 1 hour. If desired, serve with ice cream.
