Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ham and onion, cook for 6 minutes or until onion is tender and lightly browned. Add flour to skillet; cook and stir for 1 minute. Add chicken broth all at once and cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Add broccoli and cook, covered, for 5 minutes or until tender. Serve gravy over toasted bread slices. Sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper.
