Preheat broiler. Arrange poblano peppers in a large shallow baking pan. Broil 4 inches from heat for 6 to 8 minutes or until peppers are charred, turning occasionally. Transfer peppers to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap; set aside about 10 minutes or until peppers are cool enough to handle. Remove skin and seeds from peppers and chop.
In a medium saucepan, cook onion and garlic in hot oil over medium heat for 7 to 10 minutes or until onions are tender. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in chopped poblanos.
Transfer poblano mixture to a blender or food processor with avocado and cilantro; cover and blend or process to combine. Gradually add water to mixture, blending or processing to make a sauce. Stir in lime juice.
