Classic Mashed Potatoes

For perfect mashed potatoes, start with starchy russet potatoes. Do not overcook them or the mashed potatoes will be watery. Use a potato masher or if you have one, a ricer, for mashing. Add warm half-and half for richness. Use this recipe as a starting point then try the variations to season the potatoes with herbs, spices, cheese and more.

  • Place potatoes in medium saucepan. Cover with water and add 1 teaspoon of the sea salt. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are fork tender. Drain and return potatoes to saucepan.

  • Mash potatoes with potato masher, gradually adding half-and-half then butter. Stir in remaining 1 teaspoon sea salt and pepper.

Cooking tip


Bay Leaf Mashed Potatoes: Add 1 McCormick Gourmet™ Turkish Bay Leaf to water to cook the potatoes. Discard bay leaf after draining potatoes.

Garlic Rosemary Mashed Potatoes: Add 1/2 teaspoon each McCormick Gourmet™ Garlic Powder and McCormick Gourmet™ Crushed Rosemary.

Dill Crème Fraîche Mashed Potatoes: Add 2 tablespoons crème fraîche or sour cream and 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Gourmet™ Dill Weed.

Parmesan Black Pepper Mashed Potatoes: Add 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese. To season the mashed potatoes, use 1/2 teaspoon each pepper and sea salt.

Mediterranean Mashed Potatoes: Add 2 ounces soft goat cheese, crumbled, 2 green onions, thinly sliced, and 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Gourmet™ Thyme, crushed.

Smoky Bacon Mashed Potatoes: Add 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese, 3 slices bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled, 1 teaspoon McCormick Gourmet™ Smoked Paprika and 1/4 teaspoon McCormick Gourmet™ Garlic Powder.

Chipotle Cheddar Mashed Potatoes: Add 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese and 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Gourmet™ Chipotle Chile Pepper.
