Vanilla Tips

  • Add rich flavor to your breakfast by putting a splash of vanilla in pancakes, waffles or French toast.
  • For a nighttime treat, heat sweetened milk until steamy, then turn off the heat and stir in a few drops of vanilla.

Red Food Color Tips

  • Add color to your baking! Experiment with the entire range of hues red food color can make, from pink to deep red.
  • Red sugar is a great go-to holiday garnish. Pour decorator's sugar in a baggie, add a few drops of red food color then zip the bag and shake. Easy!
  • Try this festive-looking treat: tint half of cheesecake batter red and swirl it with the white.

Gale Gand

Gale Gand was recognized in 2001 by The James Beard Foundation and Bon Appetit magazine as Outstanding Pastry Chef of the Year. In 1994, she was recognized as one of Food & Wine's Top Ten Best New Chefs. In addition to making several television appearances, she is the author of the cookbook Chocolate and Vanilla, and executive pastry chef and partner of TRU, in Chicago. The mother of three children, Gale spends her free time teaching pastry and baking classes at their schools.
